I learned to stifle the urge to gush about some new strategy I was planning to try or to open up about a struggle I was having with my students. The teachers’ lounge was never a safe place for me emotionally or intellectually, and finding others to share my real thoughts and feelings with took a lot of work. When I was in the classroom, I felt alone in my nerdiness. This work gave me new passion for preparing and supporting educators. In 2008, I was hired by a local university to teach pre-service teachers. Then, after having my first child, I left teaching to be a stay-at-home mom. I earned my National Board Certification in 2004. area, the other half in southcentral Kentucky. Half that time was spent in the greater D.C. We plan to continue to communicate and provide resources throughout the summer that help us to engage in these critical conversations.For seven years, I taught middle school language arts. We recognize that much more needs to be done to build a culture of equity, inclusion, and belonging for our students and we appreciate our partners in this process. The Wyoming City Schools Global Classroom Team has gathered suggested titles and discussion guides for adults, along with recommended book lists for children of all ages, for summer reading. Individual or group reading can help us, the educators and caregivers of the Wyoming community, gather knowledge and tools to assist us in thoughtful and engaging discussions about race now and into the future. Today, I am also sharing additional resources to support conversations regarding equity, inclusion, and anti-racism. We are eager to have open dialogue with all of our students and excited about the ways that we can use their input to inform our actions. More information about these opportunities will be shared with members of the Wyoming High School Class of 2021 and their families in the coming days. This summer, we are specifically reaching out to our incoming senior class to learn from and discuss their experiences in our schools. We are looking forward to creating opportunities to connect students with this work throughout the 2020-2021 school year.
